Bulgarian border police have announced the detention of 24 Afghan migrants who were discovered in a smuggling vehicle near the village of Lozents.
According to Euronews, the driver attempted to flee and collided with several vehicles before being arrested. Most of the migrants were found unconscious and suffering from dehydration. After receiving initial medical treatment, they were transferred to a refugee center.
Authorities said the migrants had each paid around 4,000 euros to smugglers for the illegal journey from Turkey to Western Europe.
The Bulgarian police chief noted that migrant groups are being stopped at the border on a daily basis, stressing that the routes used by smugglers are extremely dangerous and put lives at risk.
Migration experts point to Afghanistan’s worsening economic hardships and insecurity as the primary drivers behind the rising number of illegal crossings. They warn that without urgent attention, such incidents could lead to more severe humanitarian and legal consequences.
