UN Establishes AI Advisory Panel to Address Global Concerns
——————————————-
The United Nations General Assembly has officially created an artificial intelligence (AI) advisory body to assist countries in making informed decisions about the rapidly advancing technology, Arab News reported. This move, which follows growing concerns among member states about AI’s potential to threaten democracy and human rights, was made to ensure the technology serves humanity.

The new body, named the Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence, will consist of 40 members who will serve a three-year term. Their primary function will be to provide evidence-based scientific assessments that synthesize and analyze existing research on AI’s opportunities, risks, and impacts. The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, will be responsible for selecting the panel’s members.

In addition to the advisory panel, the resolution also establishes an annual global dialogue on AI governance among governments and other stakeholders. These sessions will focus on international cooperation, sharing best practices, and discussing how AI can contribute to achieving UN global development goals. The first such dialogue is scheduled to be held in Geneva next year at a world summit on AI.

Costa Rican Ambassador Maritza Chan Valverde, who helped lead the discussions, emphasized that AI’s swift development affects all nations. She stated that with this resolution, the UN is reaffirming its “central role” in ensuring that AI is used to benefit humanity.
