Marking the annual observance on August 23, the UNESCO Director-General stressed that this day serves as a reminder of the tragedy of the transatlantic slave trade and the need to preserve its memory in the collective consciousness of humanity.

According to Shia Waves Persian, Audrey Azoulay underlined that every human being deserves unconditional recognition of equality and dignity, a principle that must guide societies in addressing ongoing injustices.

She also highlighted that the struggles and sacrifices of victims of oppression and freedom fighters throughout history continue to inspire future generations in building fair, inclusive, and sustainable societies.

Azoulay further emphasized that this remembrance is not only about honoring the past but also about reinforcing the universal values of human rights and solidarity to combat modern-day forms of servitude and exploitation.

The annual commemoration, first proclaimed by UNESCO in 1998, pays tribute to the resilience of enslaved peoples and the movements that led to the abolition of slavery, while also calling on nations to remain vigilant against contemporary threats to human freedom.
