Iraq Repatriates 50 Suspects Accused of Mass Killings From Abroad
………………
Iraq has repatriated dozens of nationals accused of mass killings, including one recently extradited from Germany, the National Center for International Judicial Cooperation announced Thursday. Investigator Ali Diaa told state media that between 30 and 50 Iraqis linked to mass killings were brought back in 2024 through coordination with foreign authorities.
The latest case involved a suspect accused of murdering his mother, participating in the 2014 Camp Speicher massacre, and involvement in other atrocities against Iraqi communities. He is now facing trial in Iraq. Diaa added that most ISIS-linked fighters remain in Syria’s al-Hol camp, where Iraqi families are being gradually repatriated after separating suspected militants.
According to the center, more than 3,000–4,000 Iraqis are implicated in mass killings, while around 23,000 family members remain in al-Hol. Some foreign fighters, whose home countries refuse to repatriate them, are being handed over to Iraq for prosecution due to differences in legal systems and the death penalty.
