Thousands Rally in Tunis Demanding Union Rights and Civic Freedoms Amid Political Tensions

Thousands of members and supporters of Tunisia’s influential Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) gathered on Thursday in the capital to protest what they described as growing restrictions on union rights and civic freedoms, Arab News reported. The demonstration marked one of the largest political gatherings in Tunisia in recent months and highlighted escalating tensions between the UGTT and President Kais Saied.
The protest began outside the UGTT headquarters and proceeded along Habib Bourguiba Avenue, a historic site of major protests during the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings. Participants voiced concerns over rising poverty, hunger, and the erosion of workers’ protections, chanting slogans such as “The right to struggle is a duty.”
UGTT Secretary-General Noureddine Taboubi condemned what he termed “threats and smear campaigns” against the union. He urged authorities to release political prisoners and ensure fair judicial processes, reaffirming the union’s commitment to defending workers’ rights and its social role.
This demonstration follows a recent UGTT strike over wages and working conditions that severely disrupted national transport services, intensifying pressure on President Saied amid ongoing economic challenges. Earlier this month, supporters of Saied rallied outside the UGTT offices, calling for the union’s suspension.
Since assuming broad powers in 2021, including dissolving the elected parliament and ruling by decree, Saied’s government has faced accusations from opposition groups of undermining democratic institutions.
Authorities have yet to issue an official response regarding Thursday’s protest.
