UN Meeting Advances Global Marine Biodiversity Treaty

According to a report by UN News, a meeting is being held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York to move forward with a global marine biodiversity treaty. The agreement, adopted in June 2023, aims to protect the ocean through measures such as environmental impact assessments and the sustainable use of marine genetic resources.

The treaty, officially known as the “Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction,” has already secured 139 signatures and 52 ratifications. It needs just 8 more ratifications to enter into force, which could happen as early as 2026.

Delegates are currently discussing complex issues, including funding and the creation of a “Clearing-House Mechanism” for information exchange. Developing nations, including the G77, China, and the African Group, have emphasized the importance of mandatory funding to support delegates from least developed countries and small island developing states. The meeting is scheduled to continue until August 29.
