At least 25 people are missing and presumed dead after a boat carrying about 50 passengers, including women and children, capsized in Nigeria’s northwestern Sokoto State, Arab News reported. The incident occurred on Sunday while the vessel was transporting people and motorcycles to the Goronyo market. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that 25 individuals were rescued, but no bodies had been recovered as of Tuesday morning.

Authorities have attributed the accident to an overloaded vessel and poor road infrastructure, which forces many residents to rely on water transport. Boat accidents are common in Nigeria during the rainy season due to poor safety regulations and overloaded vessels. Rescue efforts have been hampered by strong water currents from a nearby dam.
