Eighteen people lost their lives and nine others were injured on Friday after a bus plunged from a bridge into a river in the Algerian capital, according to emergency services, Arab News reported. The accident occurred late in the afternoon in the Mohammadia district in eastern Algiers. Authorities confirmed that two of the injured remain in critical condition.
Rescue teams were dispatched immediately to the scene to transfer victims to nearby hospitals and secure the area. However, officials said the cause of the accident has not yet been determined and investigations are underway.
The incident marks one of the deadliest road accidents in the capital in recent years, raising renewed concerns about traffic safety in the country.
