Concerns of Syrian Collapse Rise After Assad’s Fall
——————————
Nine months after Bashar al-Assad’s fall, Syria remains plagued by violence and instability, Shia Waves Persian reported citing the Austrian newspaper Der Standard. The interim government, led by Ahmad al-Shara, faces significant challenges from various ethnic and religious minorities who distrust its ability to unite the country.
The report from Der Standard highlights ongoing local resistance and attacks by hardline Sunni groups against minority communities, including Alawites, Druze, and Shiites. The UN Security Council issued a strong statement condemning an incident where Syrian security forces reportedly shot a nurse and verbally attacked Druze.
The Kurds, who have long held autonomous control over the northeast, are unwilling to give up their self-rule. Diplomatic efforts by al-Shara to gain support from the US and to engage with Turkey and Russia are ongoing, but there are growing fears that Syria could fracture into a non-peaceful partition.
