HRW Labels Israeli Airstrikes on Evin Prison as War Crimes
——————————-
Human Rights Watch (HRW) has condemned Israeli airstrikes on Iran’s Evin Prison as unlawful and indiscriminate, labeling them as war crimes, according to a report from Africanews. The attacks, which occurred on June 23, 2025, struck multiple buildings within the prison complex, killing at least 80 people, including prisoners and prison staff, according to official Iranian sources.
HRW’s investigation found that there was no discernible military target at the prison, which houses over 1,500 people, including many political prisoners. The organization noted that the strikes took place during visiting hours, causing significant damage to the visiting room, central kitchen, and medical clinic.
The report on Evin Prison is part of a larger inquiry into the hostilities between Israel and Iran that took place from June 13 to June 25, which also included Iranian ballistic missile attacks on civilian areas in Israel. HRW stated that it reached out to both Iranian and Israeli authorities for comment but has not yet received a response. The organization concluded that the extensive damage caused by the strikes underscores their indiscriminate nature.
