‘Godfather of AI’ Warns of Superintelligence, Calls for ‘Maternal Instincts’ in Machines

Geoffrey Hinton, the renowned computer scientist often referred to as the “godfather of AI,” has issued a stark warning about the future of artificial intelligence, suggesting that machines could soon surpass human intelligence, Fox Business reported. Speaking at the Ai4 conference in Las Vegas, Hinton proposed a novel approach to ensuring humanity’s safety by building “maternal instincts” into advanced AI systems.

Hinton believes that artificial general intelligence (AGI) could arrive within the next 5 to 20 years. He warned that attempts to control these superintelligent systems through dominance would be futile. To counter this, Hinton suggests that researchers should focus on creating AI that genuinely cares for humanity. He posits that the only existing model for a more intelligent being being guided by a less intelligent one is the parent-child relationship. While acknowledging the technical challenges, he emphasized that this research is critical for the survival of the human race.
