Yemen Faces Economic Collapse Amid Worsening Food Insecurity, Government Warns UN

The Yemeni government has alerted the United Nations Security Council that the country is on the verge of economic collapse and urgently requires international aid to prevent a deepening humanitarian crisis, Arab News reported. This warning follows a recent UN statement describing Yemen’s food insecurity as reaching “disastrous” levels.
According to Yemen’s UN envoy Abdullah Al-Saadi, the loss of oil revenues—which previously accounted for 70 percent of public income—has severely weakened state services and deteriorated living conditions for millions. The ongoing conflict, compounded by climate shocks and declining international aid, has intensified the crisis.
The UN reports that nearly half of Yemen’s children under five suffer from acute malnutrition, with many dying in displacement camps. The government emphasized that without increased funding and support, more people will face famine, and any hopes for recovery will be undermined.
Al-Saadi called on donor nations and organizations to increase financial contributions ahead of an international food security conference scheduled for October. He stressed that Yemen “stands on the threshold of a difficult phase” and cannot achieve stability without sustained external assistance.
