UN Security Council Condemns Violence Against Civilians in Syria
————————————
Based on a report from JURIST News, the UN Security Council has met to address the escalating violence against civilians in Syria’s Sweida region. The council adopted a presidential statement strongly condemning the violence and calling on all parties to the conflict to adhere to the ceasefire. The council also urged Syrian interim authorities to conduct swift, impartial, and comprehensive investigations into the attacks.
The report highlights that the UN Security Council reaffirmed its support for the “sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic” and demanded an end to all attacks against civilians and civilian objects. The UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, noted that the country’s fragile peace process is at high risk of further escalation.
In addition to the violence, a humanitarian crisis is worsening, with over 191,000 people internally displaced in the As-Sweida Governorate since mid-July. This adds to the more than 16.5 million people in need of humanitarian assistance across Syria. The Security Council also addressed the persistent threat of terrorism from groups like ISIL and Al-Qaida, which, according to a recent report, view the country as a “strategic base for external operations.”
