Iraq: Basra Plans Direct Rail Link from Shalamcheh Border to Karbala

Basra Governor Asaad Al-Eidani announced plans to develop the Shalamcheh border crossing into Iraq’s largest and most significant gateway, covering an area of 560 dunams. The upgrades include the installation of a water pipeline and an electricity line, positioning the crossing as a fully integrated hub for trade and passenger services.

Al-Eidani said the project will be connected in the future to a new railway line linking Shalamcheh directly to the holy city of Karbala. He noted that the planned rail connection is expected to enhance transportation and strengthen travel and trade between the border crossing and Karbala.
