A powerful earthquake that struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula last Wednesday caused the southern region to shift nearly two meters southeast, local scientists reported Tuesday, according to the Kamchatka branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Preliminary geodynamic data revealed major ground displacement, with the most significant movement recorded in the south.

Researchers said the deformation pattern was consistent with initial fault models and noted similarities to the seismic shifts caused by Japan’s 2011 Tohoku earthquake. Smaller shifts were also detected near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, with varying impacts across the region based on fault dynamics.
