Pakistan Monsoon Rains Claim 299 Lives, Including 140 Children

The death toll from ongoing monsoon rains across Pakistan has tragically risen to 299, with 140 children among the fatalities, Anadolu Agency reported citing the country’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). Since June 26, torrential rains have triggered widespread flash floods and landslides, also injuring over 700 people.

The eastern province of Punjab has accounted for nearly half of the total deaths, followed by the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). Among the injured, 239 are children, 204 women, and 272 men.

The meteorological department has forecast a new spell of rains and thunderstorms beginning Monday in Punjab, KP, and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, prompting rescue agencies to brace for potential emergencies. Monsoon rains frequently cause devastation in South Asia, and their unpredictability and intensity have heightened in recent years, attributed to climate change.
