Iran Launches New Sea Route for Arbaeen Pilgrims to Basra

Iran has inaugurated a new sea route for Arbaeen pilgrims, connecting the port city of Khorramshahr in southwestern Iran to Basra in southern Iraq, Iran Front Page reported. The first group of Iranian pilgrims departed by sea on Friday, August 1, marking the official launch of this initiative by Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization.

According to managing director Saeid Rasouli, the re-established Khorramshahr-Basra passenger line can accommodate up to four daily round-trip voyages, depending on demand. This maritime route is notable for being the shortest from Iran to southern Iraq, spanning only 17 nautical miles. Rasouli emphasized that the service aims to facilitate pilgrim transit and enhance bilateral relations between the two nations.

This is the second consecutive year the sea route is operational, following extensive coordination with Iraqi counterparts. A private-sector vessel with a 235-passenger capacity and modern amenities will serve the route. Authorities are considering continuing the service year-round if sustained demand warrants it.
