Afghanistan Ranked World’s Most Food-Insecure Nation by UN FAO

Afghanistan has been designated as the world’s most food-insecure country for 2024-2025 by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Khaama Press reported. This alarming classification, released in a report on July 30, underscores a persistent crisis, as Afghanistan has remained on the FAO’s chronic hunger list since 2016.
According to the report, a staggering 75% of Afghanistan’s population faces livelihood insecurity, with over 12 million people in urgent need of food assistance. Multiple factors are exacerbating this dire situation. Widespread poverty, worsened by the return of over 1.6 million migrants from neighboring countries, a significant reduction in international aid, and stringent economic restrictions, have collectively pushed millions below the poverty line.
Furthermore, consecutive droughts, pervasive unemployment, and damaged agricultural infrastructure have severely undermined domestic food production, particularly impacting vital farming and livestock regions. The crisis is compounded by the Taliban’s restrictions on women’s work and education, which has cut off crucial income streams for countless families. Aid agencies, including the World Food Programme (WFP), are appealing for immediate international support and sustained funding to avert a spiraling hunger disaster in the country.
