HRW Accuses Israel of War Crimes Over Killings of Palestinians Seeking Food in Gaza

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has issued a scathing report accusing Israeli forces of committing war crimes by killing Palestinians seeking food in Gaza, citing a “flawed, militarized aid distribution system” that has led to a significant death toll, HRW website reported. The article states that at least 859 Palestinians were killed between May 27 and July 31, 2025, primarily by the Israeli military, while attempting to obtain aid at sites operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).

The organization asserts that these killings, coupled with Israel’s alleged use of starvation as a weapon and intentional aid deprivation, amount to crimes against humanity and acts of genocide. HRW is urging international states to pressure Israel to cease using lethal force against civilians, lift aid restrictions, and suspend the current GHF distribution system, advocating for the resumption of aid deliveries by the UN and other humanitarian organizations.

The GHF distribution mechanism, operational since May and coordinated with the Israeli military, utilizes US private subcontracted companies. HRW’s investigation, based on witness testimonies, satellite imagery, and social media analysis, indicates that these aid sites are located in dangerous, militarized zones where Israeli forces control movement with live ammunition. Doctors have reported a sharp increase in gunshot injuries among aid-seekers, particularly teenage boys. HRW concludes that the US, by backing this system, is complicit in these alleged violations.
