Senior PTI Leaders Sentenced to 10 Years in Pakistan

A Faisalabad anti-terrorism court (ATC) has sentenced several senior leaders of Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party to 10-year jail terms, Clarion India reported. The decision, announced on July 31, 2025, is linked to the widespread May 9 protests, which saw military installations vandalized following Imran Khan’s arrest.

Among those receiving 10-year sentences are National Assembly Opposition Leader Omar Ayub, Senate Opposition Leader Shibli Faraz, and PTI leader Zartaj Gul. In total, 108 of 185 accused individuals, including Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) chief MNA Sahibzada Hamid Raza, were handed 10-year terms in the primary case. Some individuals, like former PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry, were acquitted in related cases.

Further sentences were issued in other May 9 violence cases. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan criticized the rulings, stating that party leaders have received 45 years in sentences over three days, warning of harm to democracy. These judgments escalate legal challenges for PTI, which recently launched an anti-government campaign. Many PTI members remain jailed, and Imran Khan faces multiple charges since August 2023.
