Record-Breaking Heat Scorches Global Regions, Fueling Wildfires and Raising Alarms

Multiple regions across the globe are enduring an unprecedented and persistent heatwave, with temperatures soaring to record highs since early June and showing no signs of abatement, Anadolu Agency reported. This intense heat is fueling widespread wildfires and causing significant concern for public health and infrastructure.
In Turkiye, the Silopi district recently registered a scorching 50.5°C (122.9°F), with other areas also exceeding 49°C. Europe is also experiencing extreme conditions; Greece recorded 46°C (114.8°F) in Skala, and Finland has seen 14 consecutive days above 30°C for the first time since 1961. Southeast Asian nations, including Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia, are battling unusually high temperatures, with Japan’s Otaru also hitting 34°C (93.2°F). The Middle East continues to face relentless heat, with Baghdad forecast to reach 49°C (120.2°F).
Further compounding the crisis, an intensifying marine heatwave is affecting the Eastern Mediterranean and Aegean Sea, where sea surface temperatures are significantly elevated, reaching 3°C (5.4°F) above the 1992–2020 average as of July 22. The global average surface temperature on July 22 was 16.64°C (61.95°F), surpassing the 1992–2020 average by 0.38°C (0.68°F). This sustained period of extreme heat underscores growing concerns about climate change and its immediate impacts worldwide.
