UNSC Holds Emergency Session on Syria Following Surge in Violence, Israeli Airstrikes
…………….
The United Nations Security Council convened an emergency meeting on Thursday to address the escalating situation in Syria, following a wave of Israeli airstrikes and renewed violence in the country’s south. The session comes amid growing international concern over regional instability.
Khaled Khiari, a senior official in the UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, briefed the Council, warning that the latest outbreak of violence—particularly in Damascus and the southern city of Sweida—could undermine any chances for a credible and inclusive political transition in Syria. He also cautioned that the conflict risks deepening regional divisions.
Recent days have seen deadly clashes between Bedouin tribal fighters, Druze group, and caretaker government forces in Sweida, while Israeli strikes reportedly targeted military installations and strategic locations in and around Damascus.
The Security Council’s emergency session reflects the urgency of the deteriorating situation and the potential for further escalation if de-escalation efforts are not prioritized.
UN officials and diplomats are calling for restraint and renewed diplomatic engagement to prevent further civilian suffering and to support long-term stability in Syria. The meeting highlighted the need for international cooperation to address both the security and humanitarian dimensions of the crisis.
