Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali al-Sistani has extended his condolences to the victims of the deadly fire that broke out at a shopping mall in the city of Kut, eastern Iraq, leaving over 63 people dead and many others injured.
In a statement issued by his office, the religious authority expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident. The statement read: “We received with great sadness and regret the news of the tragic fire incident at one of the shopping centers in your dear city, which claimed the lives of dozens of visitors and caused injuries to many others. We extend our heartfelt condolences and sincere sympathy to you, especially to those who lost their loved ones in this great calamity.”
The fire erupted late Wednesday night in the newly opened Hyper Mall, which had only been operational for five days. The blaze rapidly spread through the building, trapping dozens inside and overwhelming local medical facilities.
In response, Wasit Governor Mohammed Jamil al-Miyahi declared a three-day mourning period. He also promised accountability, stating that those responsible—whether directly or indirectly—will face legal consequences, and that initial investigation results will be released within 48 hours.
