Syria decries Israel’s ‘treacherous aggression’ after attacks on Suwayda

Syria has strongly denounced Israeli airstrikes on its southern region, describing the attacks as “treacherous aggression” and a serious breach of international law, Anadolu Agency reported. The Syrian Foreign Ministry condemned the strikes as a blatant violation of Syria’s sovereignty and a clear contravention of international law and the United Nations Charter. They labeled the incident as a reprehensible act of continued aggression and external interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign nation.

The ministry emphasized that the Israeli attacks were carried out at a calculated time and under suspicious circumstances, clearly intended to destabilize national security and undermine Syrian unity during a critical period when the government is striving to restore stability and recover from the effects of war.

Syria’s Interior Ministry accused Israel of backing armed groups in Suwayda and conducting airstrikes against Syrian military and security forces, causing several casualties among security personnel and soldiers. Fighting persists in parts of Suwayda, with the government working alongside community leaders to regain control and stabilize the situation.

Israeli warplanes targeted locations in Suwayda governorate and Daraa in southern Syria. These strikes occurred shortly after Syrian Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra declared a full ceasefire in Suwayda following talks with local community representatives.

On Monday, clashes between armed Bedouin tribal fighters and Druze militias in Suwayda resulted in over 30 deaths and nearly 100 injuries, although Syrian Observatory for Human Rights put the death toll at nearly 100.
