Pope Leo XIV Calls for Ethical Global AI Governance
————————————–
At the UN’s AI for Good Summit, Pope Leo XIV urged the international community to establish coordinated ethical frameworks for artificial intelligence, emphasizing that AI must respect human dignity and fundamental freedoms, Anadolu Agency reported. Delivered by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the pope’s message stressed that AI should serve humanity and peace, not just efficiency.
He highlighted the need to consider AI’s ethical and anthropological implications as it becomes increasingly autonomous. Ethical responsibility, the pope said, lies with developers, regulators, and users alike. AI must be governed beyond utility criteria, focusing on the human person.
Citing St. Augustine’s idea of “tranquility of order,” the pope called for AI to help build peaceful, just societies and promote integral human development. While recognizing AI’s benefits in health, education, and governance, he warned it cannot replace moral judgment or human relationships.
The pope concluded by urging conscience, responsibility, and pursuit of the common good in AI development, fostering dialogue and fraternity worldwide.
