Palestinian Prisoner Count in Israel Hits Highest Level Since Second Intifada
………………..
More than 10,000 Palestinians are currently imprisoned in Israel, marking the highest number since the Second Intifada in 2000, according to Palestinian prisoners’ advocacy groups. As of early July, around 10,800 Palestinians are held in Israeli prisons and detention centers, including 50 women — two from Gaza — and over 450 children.
These figures exclude detainees held in Israeli military camps like Sde Teiman, where rights groups allege many Gaza detainees face torture. The report highlights that 3,629 Palestinians are held under administrative detention, which permits imprisonment without trial for renewable six-month terms.
An additional 2,454 detainees are classified as “unlawful combatants,” including individuals from Lebanon and Syria. Since Israel’s 1967 occupation of Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, more than 800,000 Palestinians have been imprisoned at some point, according to the UN. Advocacy groups continue to call for international attention to detention conditions and legal practices.
