Japan Evacuates Island Residents After Series of Quakes
…………………
Japanese authorities evacuated 89 residents from Toshima village after a 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck Akuseki Island in Kagoshima prefecture on Thursday, The Independent reported. The evacuation follows over 1,000 earthquakes of intensity 1 or greater in the Tokara Island chain since June 21.
Officials confirmed no tsunami warning was issued, and there were no reports of damage or injuries. Evacuees were transported by ship to temporary accommodation in Kagoshima for about a week. Meanwhile, rumours linked to a manga prediction of a major earthquake in July 2025 have led to cancellations, impacting Japan’s tourism sector.
