A French court on Thursday sentenced 16 members of the far-right group Action des Forces Opérationnelles (AFO) to prison terms of up to five years for plotting violent attacks targeting Muslims. Two defendants were acquitted, according to AFP.

Daniel R., the group’s explosives expert and military trainer, received the harshest sentence of five years with immediate detention due to his role and risk of reoffending.

The group’s founder Guy S., regional leader Bernard S., and another member, Philippe S., were handed five-year sentences with parts suspended; Guy S. and Bernard S. will serve under house arrest with electronic monitoring. Prosecutors also requested a 15-year ban on firearm possession and prohibitions on contact between the defendants, who would be added to France’s terrorist offender registry.

The group was accused of planning attacks including poisoning halal food and bombing mosque entrances, motivated by “systematic hatred” of Islam.
