A suicide bombing at a Greek Orthodox church near Damascus on Sunday killed at least 22 people and injured 63, according to local media and officials. The attack occurred during prayers at the Mar Elias Church in Dweil’a, marking one of the deadliest incidents in the Syrian capital in years.

Witnesses said a masked gunman opened fire inside the church before detonating an explosive vest at the entrance when congregants tried to stop him. Some reports suggest a second attacker may have been involved. Syrian state media shared images of blood-stained pews and debris inside the church.

No group has claimed responsibility, but Syria’s Interior Ministry suspects the Islamic State group. Officials confirmed that around 350 people were present during the attack. The incident has raised concerns over extremist sleeper cells amid Syria’s ongoing instability and efforts to regain control across the country.
