UK on heat alert as temperatures surge nationwide
…………………….
The UK is on track to experience its first official heatwave of the year, with temperatures expected to peak at 33°C by the weekend, the BBC reported. On Wednesday, St James’ Park in London recorded 29.3°C, just shy of this year’s highest of 29.4°C in Suffolk on 13 June.
Yellow heat-health alerts have been issued for most of England, excluding the North East and North West, lasting until Sunday evening. The alerts warn of increased risks to vulnerable groups and potential pressure on health and social services.
Temperatures are forecast to reach 30°C in parts of southern and central England on Thursday, with even warmer nights to follow. Friday and Saturday will likely be the hottest days, especially in south-east England and East Anglia, where 33°C is possible. A “tropical night,” where temperatures stay above 20°C, is also likely on Saturday.
The rising heat is due to high pressure drawing warm air from southern Europe, where parts of France and Spain may approach 40°C. Meanwhile, a Met Office study warns of an increasing risk of 40°C temperatures in the UK, with a possible high of 46.6°C in future decades due to climate change. Occasional showers and storms are expected over the weekend.
