UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has called for urgent diplomatic negotiations to de-escalate the rising conflict between Israel and Iran, warning of the severe dangers posed by recent military exchanges. Speaking from the UN office in Geneva, Türk expressed deep concern over the escalating violence and urged both sides to uphold international law, particularly the protection of civilians.

“I stand with all voices calling for immediate dialogue and de-escalation,” he said, following Israel’s surprise attacks early Friday targeting Iranian nuclear and missile facilities, which reportedly killed 224 people and injured over 1277.

Iran responded later the same day with waves of ballistic missiles and drone strikes, marking the most intense military exchange between the two nations to date.

Observers warn that this shift from covert operations to open conflict signals a dangerous escalation that could destabilize the broader region without swift diplomatic intervention.
