Death toll of journalists in Gaza rises to 227 amid ongoing war
The number of journalists killed in Gaza has risen to 227 since the war began on October 7, 2023, according to the Government Media Office in Gaza. The latest victim, photojournalist Moamen Mohammed Abu Alouf, was killed Tuesday in an Israeli airstrike in eastern Gaza City while on a humanitarian mission, along with three paramedics.
The media office condemned what it called Israel’s “systematic targeting” of Palestinian journalists, accusing the Israeli military of attempting to silence coverage of alleged war crimes in the besieged territory.
The statement urged international journalist unions and media organizations to hold Israel accountable and demanded urgent international action to protect journalists and stop what it described as an ongoing genocide.
Just days earlier, journalist Ahmad Qalaja succumbed to his injuries, bringing the toll to 226 before Abu Alouf’s death. Over eight months of war have left more than 180,000 Palestinians dead or wounded and caused a deepening humanitarian crisis.
