Authorities in India’s northeastern state of Manipur declared a curfew and internet blackout following violent clashes between protesters and security forces, Arab News reported. The unrest erupted on Saturday after the arrest of five members of Arambai Tenggol, a radical Meitei group, including a commander. Angry mobs attacked a police post, torched a bus, and blocked roads in the capital, Imphal.

Police imposed curfews in five districts, including Imphal West and Bishnupur, citing a “deteriorating law-and-order situation.” The state also suspended mobile data services for five days to curb unrest. Arambai Tenggol, accused of targeting the Christian Kuki minority, announced a 10-day shutdown in valley districts.

Manipur has witnessed sporadic violence since 2023 between the Hindu-majority Meiteis and Christian Kukis, leaving over 250 dead and displacing 60,000. Thousands remain unable to return home due to persistent tensions, fueled by disputes over land and resources. Activists accuse local leaders of inflaming ethnic divisions for political gain.

The state’s home ministry urged compliance with curfew orders while security forces work to restore calm.
