US: 500,000 bees killed in suspected vandalism at Virginia farm

Authorities are investigating a case of suspected vandalism after approximately 500,000 honey bees were found dead at a Virginia bee farm, the Independent reported. The incident, which occurred on April 13 at Rock Hill Honey Bee Farms, caused an estimated $20,000 in damages.
Farm owner Jerry Mattiaccio discovered the scene when he arrived at his five-acre property and noticed his gates had been locked with heavy-duty chains. He later found the bee colonies—around 60 in total—dead, with signs consistent with pesticide poisoning.
Mattiaccio, 62, said the attack appeared deliberate and noted that the damage targeted his growing business, which had expanded to over 1,100 colonies since he began beekeeping in 2010.
The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office has opened an investigation. Meanwhile, Mattiaccio has urged supporters to help by purchasing honey at his farmers’ markets in various nearby towns.
Despite the setback, the former Army veteran says he remains committed to rebuilding and continuing his work.
