New Forest to be Created in West England with 20 Million Trees by 2050

The UK government has announced the creation of a new Western Forest spanning 2,500 hectares (6,200 acres) across Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Somerset, and Bristol, The Guardian reported. This initiative aims to plant 20 million trees by 2050 as part of the government’s commitment to national forests.

Set to be completed by 2030, the project will enhance urban and rural areas, increase tree cover for wildlife, and provide access to nature. Nearly 75% of the planned forest area consists of farmland, promoting agroforestry and sustainable management practices.

The project, supported by up to £7.5 million in government funding, will also revitalize existing woodlands and natural habitats. Nature Minister Mary Creagh emphasized the benefits of connecting communities with nature, while Alex Stone from the Forest of Avon Trust highlighted the positive impact on local residents and visitors. The initiative builds on the success of the National Forest in the Midlands, which has seen over 9.8 million trees planted.
