Thousands Demand Return of Monarchy in Nepal

Thousands gathered in Kathmandu on Sunday to welcome former King Gyanendra Shah, demanding the reinstatement of the monarchy and the return of Hinduism as the state religion, VOA reported. An estimated 10,000 supporters blocked the entrance to Tribhuvan International Airport, chanting, “Come back king, save the country.”
The rally reflects growing frustration with Nepal’s political instability, corruption, and economic struggles since the monarchy was abolished in 2008. Protesters expressed disappointment in the republic, with many blaming it for the country’s woes.
Thir Bahadur Bhandari, a rally participant, stated, “We are here to give the king our full support.” Kulraj Shrestha, a carpenter who once protested against the monarchy, echoed similar sentiments, citing widespread corruption among current politicians.
Despite the show of support, Gyanendra has not commented on the calls for his return, and the likelihood of a monarchy revival remains uncertain amid Nepal’s complex political landscape.
