UN Security Council Raises Alarm Over Sudan’s Parallel Government Charter

On Thursday, the UN Security Council expressed serious concerns regarding a newly signed charter aimed at establishing a parallel governing authority in Sudan, Arab News reported. This charter, endorsed by Sudanese political groups and armed factions aligned with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), threatens to exacerbate the country’s fragmentation and worsen its humanitarian crisis.
Council members warned that unilateral actions undermine Sudan’s sovereignty and could destabilize the region. They called for an immediate ceasefire and urged both parties to engage in diplomatic efforts to restore peace.
The Sudanese government condemned the charter, asserting it encourages division and violates national sovereignty. The Security Council emphasized the necessity of a genuine national dialogue to achieve a democratically elected government, aligning with the aspirations of the Sudanese people.
Additionally, the Council reiterated its commitment to international humanitarian law and called for compliance with previous resolutions, including arms embargoes, to support efforts for lasting peace in the war-torn nation.
