Pakistan coal mine collapse kills 11, safety violations blamed

A coal mine collapse in Sanjdi, near Quetta in Pakistan’s Balochistan province, has claimed 11 lives, with one worker still missing, news reports said. The incident occurred on January 8, 2025, due to a methane gas buildup that triggered an explosion and cave-in, officials said.

Rescue teams have recovered 11 bodies over three days but face challenges due to toxic gases and debris, according to provincial mining department head Abdullah Shawani. Chances of finding the last trapped worker alive are slim, he added.

Mining regulations were reportedly not followed, with workers’ association leader Pir Muhammad Kakar blaming mine owners and mining department officials for negligence. He called for strict action against those responsible.

Balochistan, rich in coal, has a history of fatal mining accidents due to poor safety standards. Last year, 12 miners died in a similar gas explosion, highlighting the ongoing risks in the region.
