Afghanistan faces escalating security challenges in 2024

Afghanistan experienced a tumultuous 2024, marked by escalating attacks from ISIS-Khorasan, ongoing armed resistance, and rising border tensions with Pakistan. The security situation deteriorated as violence spread across the country, targeting civilians, opposition groups, and officials.

A United Nations report documented 8,650 security incidents between November 2023 and November 2024, resulting in 156 civilian deaths and 426 injuries. ISIS-Khorasan was responsible for at least 19 attacks during the year, focusing on Hazara and Shia civilians, Sufi practitioners, foreign nationals, and government officials.

Armed opposition groups also intensified their activities. The National Resistance Front (NRF) and the Afghanistan Freedom Front together claimed over 200 attacks on Taliban forces, with figures corroborated by United Nations data.

Meanwhile, human rights abuses were reported, including extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detentions, and torture, affecting both former government officials and individuals accused of ties to ISIS or resistance groups.

Border tensions with Pakistan added to the instability. Two airstrikes on Afghan territory, allegedly targeting militant groups, resulted in significant civilian casualties, including women and children. The strikes occurred in March and December, highlighting ongoing cross-border challenges.

As Afghanistan grapples with these crises, the Taliban face mounting pressure to address internal security threats, contain armed resistance, and manage strained regional relations. The volatile environment underscores the significant hurdles to achieving stability in the country.
