Bangladesh Requests Extradition of Former PM Sheikh Hasina from India
Bangladesh has formally requested India to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to New Delhi in August following student-led protests that ended her 15-year rule, The Guardian reported. The request was confirmed by Bangladesh’s foreign affairs adviser, Touhid Hossain, who stated that a diplomatic note was sent to the Indian government seeking Hasina’s return for judicial proceedings.
Relations between Bangladesh and India have strained since Hasina’s ousting, with the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus demanding her extradition to face charges including crimes against humanity and genocide. Hasina denies these allegations.
India’s foreign ministry acknowledged receipt of the extradition request but did not comment further. The situation follows a visit by India’s foreign secretary, Vikram Misri, to Dhaka, where both nations expressed a desire to improve relations. Hasina’s continued presence in India has raised concerns, as she has criticized Yunus’s administration from abroad.
