Kashmiri scholars demand urgent dialogue on 2024 Waqf Act amendments
The Council of Scholars, a prominent religious and social body representing the Muslim community in Jammu and Kashmir, has called for immediate dialogue over proposed amendments to the 2024 Waqf Act.
The Islamic Waqf Union, led by Mirwaiz Farooq, expressed concerns that these changes could undermine the autonomy and core objectives of the Waqf institution, according to the Kashmir Media Service.
The proposed amendments have sparked widespread concern within the Kashmiri community, particularly over their potential impact on religious, social, and charitable institutions. The Union emphasized the need for cautious handling of the issue through inclusive dialogue mechanisms to address the implications for the welfare of the Muslim community in the region.
In a letter to Jagdambika Pal, chair of the joint committee overseeing the amendments, the council called for broad consultations to avoid unilateral decisions that could exacerbate divisions.
Mirwaiz Farooq stated, “Given the gravity of the situation and its potential repercussions, we demand an urgent meeting to voice our concerns and find collaborative solutions. Jammu and Kashmir, as a Muslim-majority region, deserves consideration of its specific needs.”
The council emphasized that meaningful dialogue is essential to ensure the amendments align with the community’s interests and strengthen the Waqf’s vital role in serving the Muslim population.
