Sudan Reports Over 43,000 Cholera Cases and 1,800 Deaths Amid Ongoing Conflict
As of November 28, Sudan’s Health Ministry reported over 43,490 cholera cases and 1,187 deaths in the conflict-ridden nation, Anadolu Agency reported yesterday.
Recent updates indicate 221 new cholera cases across eight states, including Khartoum, Al Jazirah, and Kassala, with two additional fatalities.
The cholera outbreak, primarily spread through contaminated water, leads to severe diarrhea and dehydration, posing a significant health threat. Alongside this, the ministry also noted 15 new cases of dengue fever, raising the total to 8,008 infections and 16 deaths. Dengue, transmitted by mosquitoes, presents symptoms such as high fever and joint pain.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), resulting in over 20,000 deaths and displacing more than 14 million people, according to UN estimates. The ongoing violence exacerbates the public health crisis in the region.
