Grand Ayatollah Shirazi Remarks on “Dhū al-Qurbā” in Holy Quran During Daily Scholarly Session

The daily scholarly session led by Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sadiq al-Hosseini al-Shirazi continued at his honourable residence in Qom on Thursday, the 11th of Jumada al-Awwal. As in previous sessions, the Supreme Marja addressed questions from attendees regarding various jurisprudential issues.

In discussing the Meccan or Medinan nature of the revelation of verse 26 of Surah Al-Isra, which mentions Fatimah al-Zahra (Peace Be Upon Her) as “Dhū al-Qurbā,” Grand Ayatollah Shirazi stated: “It has been narrated from the Ahl al-Bayt (Peace Be Upon Them) that while a surah may be Medinan, some of its verses can be Meccan, and vice versa.”

His Eminence further remarked, “Even if Surah Al-Isra is classified as a Meccan surah, and even if this noble verse is also Meccan, there exists a specific narration regarding this verse, which has been transmitted by both Shia and Sunni sources.”

Regarding the concept of “Dhū al-Qurbā” in verse 26 of Surah Al-Isra, he explained: “Since the Pure Progeny have clarified that this verse specifically refers to Fatimah al-Zahra (Peace Be Upon Her) as ‘Dhū al-Qurbā,’ everything established by the Pure Progeny is, like the Holy Quran, a Hujjah (binding proof).”
