Muslims in UK Face Rising Islamophobia, Warns Runnymede Trust Head

Shabna Begum, chief executive of the Runnymede Trust, has highlighted a troubling rise in Islamophobia in the UK, warning that the current political climate could lead to more racist riots, The Guardian reported yesterday.

In an interview with the British newspaper, she emphasized that derogatory political rhetoric has intensified, creating a “bleak and dystopian” environment for British Muslims.

Begum noted a significant increase in hate incidents, with Tell Mama reporting a 335% rise in anti-Muslim attacks in early 2024 compared to the previous year. The report also revealed that 38% of all religious hate crimes were directed at Muslims, marking a 13% increase.

She criticized both Labour and Conservative parties for perpetuating hostility towards Muslims, stating that political leaders are engaging in a “popularity contest” that often involves demonizing Muslim communities. The recent riots, which coincided with the Israel-Gaza conflict, further exacerbated tensions, as many politicians hesitated to address Islamophobia for fear of appearing to defend Muslims.

Begum called for substantial government action and funding to address the root causes of racial tensions and to support community cohesion. She warned that without a change in approach, the societal divisions could become a regular feature of UK politics, echoing sentiments that the safety and well-being of British Muslims are increasingly at risk.
