Grand Ayatollah Shirazi: Performing Hajj Using Loan Money is Rewarded but Not Considered Hajj al-Islam

The daily scholarly session of Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sadiq al-Hosseini al-Shirazi was held on Sunday, the 15th of Rabi’ al-Thani. In this session, as in previous meetings, the Supreme Marja addressed attendees’ questions regarding various jurisprudential matters.

Grand Ayatollah Shirazi discussed the ruling on individuals who are not financially capable of performing Hajj and take loans to go on pilgrimage. He stated that it is narrated in Hadith that if a person goes to Hajj ten times using loan money, they have not fulfilled their obligation of Hajj al-Islam.

His Eminence further explained that while the act of such individuals going to Hajj with borrowed money carries great reward, if they later become financially capable, they must perform Hajj again.

The Supreme Religious Authority also emphasized that if a person was financially able but did not go for Hajj at that time and later became poor, they are still obligated to perform Hajj by any means possible, a point also mentioned in the book “al-Urwa al-Wuthqa.”
