Migrant Workers at Carrefour in Saudi Arabia Face Exploitation, Report Reveals

A new report by Amnesty International highlights severe exploitation of migrant workers at Carrefour sites in Saudi Arabia. The investigation reveals that workers were misled by recruitment agents, forced to work excessive hours, denied days off, and cheated out of wages. Many workers lived in squalid conditions, fearing retaliation for voicing complaints.

The report documents that these abuses may constitute forced labor and human trafficking. Amnesty emphasizes Carrefour’s responsibility to prevent such violations throughout its operations, including franchises operated by Majid Al Futtaim.

Workers paid an average of $1,200 to secure jobs but were often misled about employment conditions. They reported working up to 60 hours a week, with managers canceling rest days and denying proper overtime pay. The International Labour Organization is set to review a complaint against Saudi Arabia regarding wage theft and forced labor, supported by global trade unions and human rights organizations.
