Amnesty International Demands Probe into Blasphemy Suspect Killings in Pakistan
Amnesty International has called for a thorough investigation into the recent police killings of two blasphemy suspects in Pakistan’s Sindh and Balochistan provinces, Dawn revealed today.
The organization emphasized the need for an impartial probe following the deaths of Abdul Ali in Quetta and Dr. Shah Nawaz Kunhbar in Mirpurkhas, both of whom were allegedly killed by police officers. Since May, at least four individuals accused of blasphemy have been victims of mob violence across the country, raising serious human rights concerns.
In response to the incidents, ten police officials, including a Deputy Inspector General and Senior Superintendent of Police, have been suspended. The family of Dr. Kunhbar has demanded a judicial inquiry, rejecting the police investigation. Civil society groups have condemned the killings as extrajudicial and called for accountability for those involved, urging immediate action from authorities to uphold human rights protections.
