Starlink Launches Internet Service in Yemen

Elon Musk announced that Starlink satellite internet is now available in Yemen, marking the country as the first in the Middle East to receive the service, Arab News reported yesterday.

This development follows a deal between Yemen’s internationally recognized government and Starlink, ending the Houthi militia’s monopoly on telecommunications. The government confirmed the launch via social media, promising an “unparalleled Internet experience.”

While many Yemenis welcomed the service, concerns arose over potential revenue losses for local internet companies and the risk of unmonitored content. Currently, only 17.7% of Yemen’s 34.83 million population has internet access. Analysts believe that improved connectivity could lead to significant social and economic transformations, despite fears of local businesses struggling to compete with Starlink.
