Pakistan Faces Record Violence Against Journalists in 2024
Pakistan is on track for its deadliest year for journalists, with 11 confirmed killings in 2024, raising serious concerns about press freedom, VOA revealed in an article published on Sunday.
The recent murders of Nisar Lehri, a press club secretary in Balochistan, and Muhammad Bachal Ghunio, a reporter in Sindh, highlight the alarming trend. Advocacy groups like the Freedom Network and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) have condemned the violence, calling for urgent action to hold perpetrators accountable.
Critics argue that the government’s response has been inadequate, with political influences often obstructing justice. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar acknowledged the issue, pledging to improve investigations into these cases.
Meanwhile, Reporters Without Borders emphasized the dire climate for media personnel, stating that Pakistan remains one of the most dangerous countries for journalists globally.
