India Takes Top Spot: UN Predicts Country to Remain Most Populous Through 21st Century
A new UN report forecasts India surpassing China as the world’s most populous nation throughout this century, Anadolu Agency reported yesterday.
India is expected to reach a peak population of 1.7 billion in the early 2060s, followed by a gradual decline.
Globally, the population is projected to hit 10.3 billion in the mid-2080s before stabilizing around 10.2 billion by 2100.
The report also highlights a positive trend – life expectancy is rising. Since 1995, life expectancy has climbed by 8.4 years, reaching 73.3 years in 2024. By 2054, it’s expected to average 77.4 years.
However, an aging population is on the horizon. The UN predicts that by 2080, the number of people over 65 will surpass those under 18. This demographic shift emphasizes the need for countries to embrace technology, promote diverse workforces, and provide opportunities for lifelong learning and extended careers.
